2012 Master Fellows Programme (Tier I)

18 Participants

July 4 – 14, 2012

Tema

The inaugural Master Fellows Programme was started with a 3-day “Pre-Academy Training”.  The Tier I portion of the programme was designed as a five-day introduction to professional development for secondary school educators in two parts: Teaching Practices for teachers and Instructional Leadership for assistant heads for academic affairs.  The first four training days were each dedicated to one of the four module below, where teachers received specific teaching strategies in the morning lecture format sessions and practiced these strategies in the afternoon.

The instructional leadership trainees (assistant heads) observed their teachers in the morning, and received their training and practice in the afternoons, on how to create enabling environments in their schools to support teachers.  The fifth day is dedicated to trainees simulating the delivery of portions of the modules.

The new modules designed and covered during the Tier I portion of this activity were:

*  Active Student Engagement

*  Critical Thinking Skills

*  Lesson Design and Factors Affecting Student Learning

*  Using Prior Knowledge

Results: 18 Educators from 5 schools that participated were extensively recruited nationally through a rigorous application and interview process that was managed by teams in two regions.

The trainees were introduced to INTED as an organization, and peer professional development as a sustainable initiative for academic excellence in secondary schools. A three-day Pre-Training Programme was developed by curriculum design consultants, Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET) and delivered by Mr. Paul Ahiable, one of the Master Fellow trainees.

Tier I consultants, CSET, then arrived from the USA to train our Master Fellows. INTED worked with CSET and other consultants over a 18-month needs assessment and curriculum design period to understand the needs of teachers and heads from a sample of 52-schools, tailoring the training programme also to the regional West African Senior Secondary Certificate of Examinations curricula and general needs of the underperforming students.  All the training was videotaped with a promotional video summary created. All participants received certificates.

2016 Master Fellows Programme (Tier I)

17 Trainees

January 24 – 29, 2016

Accra

On the same modules as Activity 1, Activity 5 has two particular differences: (1) one fewer module and (2) difference in design.  The Master Fellows Programme has an important difference from the Fellows Programme. In the Master Fellows Programme, the capacities of trainees are built so they can lead training of their second cycle peers in the Fellows Programme.

*  The modules covered were:

*  Active Student Engagement

*  Critical Thinking Skills

*  Lesson Design and Factors Affecting Student Learning

*  Using Prior Knowledge

Results: 17 Fellows from 8 schools in four regions in Ghana were trained.  Pictures of parts of the training were taken. Mr. Kwame Acheampong, an external monitor of our donor, the Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET)’s Skills Development Fund (SDF) was on hand to observe and interview trainees and trainers.  A couple of the pictures taken of the training has been shared below. All participants and trainers received certificates.

NOTE: As an early indication of the success of the programme, although Activities 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 11 were led by INTED’s Master Fellows that were initially trained during INTED’s 2012 Master Fellows Programme, only during Activity 2 were the initial design consultants present to support the Master Fellows.  The Tier I curriculum designers have continued to provide other support from California via online and telephone communication where necessary.
